I can casually mention this in a post now, but in the moment, things like this can have a huge effect on the mind, especially if it continually happens overtime. Working in community, I’ve dealt with hate comments, harassment, others coming to me with suicidal ideation, a bomb threat, false accusations, etc. After all it’s games! Dream job! But we forget to consider any internal resources we need. Plus, as anyone who joins the games industry is often like, we come into the industry with extreme passion, commitment, and excitement.

However, many of us (ME INCLUDED OOP) may consciously or unconsciously think that the more we throw ourselves into the fire, the better and more committed we are to our work and the wellbeing of others. Trauma stewardship is defined as when “ we care for and responsibly guide those who are struggling, but do not internalize or take on their traumas as our own.” Essentially, in order to healthily engage with our work, enact change, and care for others, we must do so in a sustainable way for ourselves.

This post is more inwards focused because that’s what I feel I can tackle here, but when we care for others and ourselves, these contextual clues will help us learn how to engage in a more healthy and productive way. These are all BIG questions that cannot be solved in this post (can you image if it could though?), but it’s important to keep these societal, cultural, and environmental aspects in mind. Does our culture value work? Does the studio we are employed at treat us like pawns or like people? How does elitism, classism, racism, sexism, ageism, and all the other -isms come into play here? How much internalized oppression do we carry with us? What biases do others carry against us? How does our economic upbringing affect our relation to our work? The list goes on and on. Our context can change how we understand and navigate our mental health and work. A lot of different things outside of our own brains can affect us, and we can’t properly talk about self care until we acknowledge there are external factors at play.
